A city-based businessman was discharged from Ranchi’s Apollo Hospital
today after doctors had successfully performed a rare operation to
prevent the bursting of an aorta on October 25.
Doctors claim that this was the first
time that the Rs. 3.40 lakh operation, which involves cutting off
blood circulation for 30 minutes, has been carried out in East India.
Rai has recovered after the operation and was able to walk around the
hospital three days after the operation.
The medical team
worked for five hours to perform the complex procedure known as
Bentall’s Operation on Manoj Kumar Rai.
Led by cardiologist Lalit Kapoor, the
procedure involved operating an aortic aneurysm — the dilation and
weakening of the aorta. The aortic valve was then replaced with
artificial materials.
Rai had been undergoing treatment for a
narrow heart valve for many years. He had previously been admitted to
a hospital in Delhi for breathing difficulties. Doctors there
attempted to remove blood from the sac surrounding the heart and had
to put in a tube to save his life. After this incident, Rai ran from
pillar to post to get treatment for his enlarged aorta and narrowed
aortic valve.
In Ranchi, Deepak Gupta, another cardiologist at Apollo Hospital found
calcium deposits had narrowed Rai’s aortic valve. He also found that
the aorta was very dilated. Gupta then proceeded to aortography, which
confirmed that the patient needed urgent repair to prevent it from
bursting.
On October 25, the
team of Dr Kapoor along with P. Alam, Saurabh Kumar, Thalpathy and
Ishtiaque, Bincya nd Suman performed a major operation wherein the
aorta was replaced with an artificial tube.
“The aortic valve was replaced, the
coronary arteries supplying the heart were detached and reimplanted on
the graft. The carotids supplying the brain were detached, the
ascending aorta and arch of aorta replaced, and the carotids implanted
on the new graft (artificial aorta),” said Kapoor.
He further added: “The operation is
special since also need the blood circulation of the patient to be
completely stopped for about 30 minutes.” |
