Our Cardiac Sciences Department at Abdur Razzaque Ansari Weavers’ Hospital, Ranchi (Apollo Hospitals Group) conducts a Diploma Cardiology course under the aegis of the IGNOU. This two-year course has both a clinical residency component and a distance education academic component.

The candidate undergoes a 24-month residency program working in the hospital. Certain hospitals in India have been identified on the basis of work-load and quality of care to be Study-centers for this course. Apollo Hospital, Ranchi has a comprehensive Cardiac Sciences department where the entire gamut of Interventional procedures (Angiography, Angioplasty, Valvuloplasty, Device-closure of congenital defects and insertion of Implantable defibrillators) and Cardiac Surgery (Coronary Bypass surgery, Valve replacements, Correction of congenital heart defects) are performed in large numbers. This is supported by an active Coronary Care unit and the latest diagnostic facilities (Transesophageal and transthoracic echocardiography, radionuclide imaging studies and stress testing). All this provides an excellent milieu for training of the Diploma students under the guidance of the Academic counsellors (Dr. Niraj Prasad, DM and Dr. Deepak Gupta, DM) who themselves pass on their valuable clinical skills to the candidates.

Simultaneously, the academic component is in the form of printed course material, teleconference programs, in-house classes and seminars. Examinations are conducted annually by the IGNOU towards the award of the PGDCC degree.
